It is coming, summer. Right now every tree is getting green here in Finland. And spring isn’t only thing floating in the air, love too.
Se ois kesä tuloillaan.. Ympäristö muuttuu vihreäksi ja ilma täyttyy tuoksuista, ehkä myös hieman rrrakkaudestakin.
Ah, it was this time of the year again, May Day. That means demos and marches, people in the parks drinking mead and champagne. For me it was mostly the first option as I was showing EuroMayDay demo to my cameras.
This year it was quite calm, only 12 people were arrested and there were no riots. People listened to music, walked through the city to Tokoinranta. Only incident I saw happened there. There were some wooden stuff (mostly planks) left in the beach, and as night got darker and colder, people thought about making a small fire/bonfire so they could warm themselves. After a while someone came there with a car full of wood. The feeling around fire was.. happy, people just talked with each other, some played drums, some just watched in to the fire.
But after a while a fire truck went past on the road, then a bus, and people started to talk that police may come there. And so it did, a huge group of riot polices came. Basically on that moment almost everyone just disappeared from the fire. There were some persons that talked with some police men and asked why they came.. Also people talked with each other about why there was a need for so many polices, as the amount of people around the fire must’ve been 20 - 30..
Well, happily everything went calmly and fire men did their job. As there was no point in being at Tokoinranta after that, people went into their homes and bars.

Niinpä niin, oli taas se aika vuodesta, vappu; mielenosoituksia ja marsseja, ihmisiä istumassa puistoissa siman ja samppanjan kera. Itselleni se oli tällä kertaa lähinnä tuota ensimmäistä..
Tämän vuotinen EuroMayDay oli melko rauhallinen, ainakin jos edelliseen vuoteen vertaa (vain 12 pidätettyä). Aluksi ihmiset kokoontuivat Kampin Narinkkatorille musiikkia kuuntelemaan, varsinainen marssi alkoi kun väki siirtyi kaupungille. 1½ tunninkaupungin kiertelyn jälkeen mielenosoitus päättyi Tokoinrantaan.
Tokoinrannassa muutama räppäri esiintyi rekkalavalta ihmisille, jonka jälkeen musiikki pauhasi lähinnä pellepataljoonan mankasta.. kunnes ihmiset saivat idean tulen väsäämisestä. Kello kun oli jo paljon niin ulkona oli melko pimeätä ja kylmää. Hetken aikaa siinä meni kunnes paikalta löytyneistä laudoista saatiin nuotio aikaiseksi, mutta kun tuli alkoi loimuta, kerääntyivät kaikki vielä paikalla olleet sen ympärille.
Tulen ääressä ihmiset lämmittelivät, juttelivat keskenään, muutamat jopa soittelivat rumpujaan, ja osa vain katsoi liekkeihin.
Tunnelma oli rauhallinen, kunnes.. ihmiset huomasivat paloauton menevän viereisellä tiellä, noh, ehkäpä se vain kävi katsastamassa tilanteen. Seuraavaksi ohi meni bussi. Ja niinhän siinä lopulta kävi, suuri joukko mellakkapoliiseja kilpineen tuli paikalle. Hyvin nopeasti suurin osa ihmisistä kaikkosi paikalta, vain pieni ryhmä jäi kyselemään syytä tähän tapahtumaan. Väki oli ihmeissään, ei sinänsä siitä että poliisilla saattoi olla sanottavaa tulesta, mutta mellakkapoliiseista; tulen ympärillä istuskeli ehkä kolmisenkymmentä henkilöä, tai kuten eräs paikallaolija sanoi, hippiä, todennäköisesti pari partiopoliisiakin olisi saanut hoidettua tilanteen..
Noh, onneks kaikki sujui loppujen lopuksi melko rauhallisesti, ihmiset lähtivät kukin minnekin, baareihin, tai kuten minäkin, koteihinsa.
During last year I’ve been photographing demonstrations and riots, and not only for fun, my diploma work (sorry, can’t find better word for that, the work I do to get out of the school on my third year) may be about these things.. I must have been in at least ten different demo with my camera, and last time it was Friday.
It was held in Helsinki, and reason? The way finnish government handles refugees by giving them B-permit, and not the “real” continous residence permit. Oh well, it’s really not my thing to preach about this so I’ll just post an image, click it and a whole gallery of same kind of shots should open:
Oh and about 1½ weeks ago I was in another demo, it was about finnish civilian service and its length (as it’s longer than normal military service). Again, I’ll just post photographs, you decide what to think about the subject.

Elikäs siis, olen viimeisen vuoden aikana ollut varmankin yli kymmenessä eri mielenosoituksessa, muutamassa mellakassakin.. Ihan pelkästään huvin vuoksi en niitä ole kierrellyt, saattaapi nimittäin käydä niin että päättötyöni käsittelee aihetta.
Viimeksi perjantaina kuvasin Helsingissä B-maahanmuuttoluvan vastaista mielenosoitusta, myöskin noin puolitoista viikkoa sitten kuvasin banderolleja sekä kuuntelin iskulauseita, tällä kertaa sivaridemossa. Näiden kahden tapahtumien kuvat löytyvät yläpuolella olevia kuvia klikkaamalla.
